Ascendant
characterizes our starting energy, view of the world and our opinions

The ascendant, or rising sign, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. As the Earth turns on its axis over the day, the ascendant changes roughly every two hours. Two people born on the same day can have completely different ascendants, because the exact time and place of birth decide it.

What the ascendant means in your chart
Your Sun sign describes who you are. The ascendant shows how that looks from the outside: the first impression you make at a new job or a party, the way you go about things, and how fast you react when a situation is new. That's why many people don't recognize themselves in their Sun sign. Others tend to see them through the ascendant.
In the birth chart, the ascendant marks the start of the first house, and all the other houses are counted from it. The planet that rules the ascendant's sign is the chart ruler, and it carries a lot of weight in a reading. Tradition also links the ascendant with the body and appearance: build, the way you walk, your facial expression.
How to find your ascendant
You need three things: the date, the exact time of birth and the place. The time is usually on your birth certificate or in the hospital records, and parents often remember it. The calculator in our personal horoscope works out the time zone and daylight saving time on its own. Just start typing your birthplace and pick it from the list.
The time matters more than you might think. The ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes, and the signs don't all rise at the same speed. Across the middle of the United States, around 40° north, Pisces and Aries each rise in about an hour and ten minutes, while Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio each take about two and a half hours. If you were born shortly after the sign changed, check your birth time as closely as you can.
Ascendant, Sun and Moon
The three most important points of a chart work together. The Sun is the core of your personality and the direction you're heading. The Moon speaks of your feelings and what you need to feel safe. The ascendant is like the front door between you and the world. A Taurus with a Leo ascendant can come across as confident and hard to miss, even if inside they mostly want calm and security. Coworkers remember a big personality, while the people at home know the patient side.
The descendant: the ascendant's opposite
Directly across from the ascendant lies the descendant, the start of the seventh house. It speaks of partnership, marriage and business partners, meaning who you choose and what you look for in other people. Often it's exactly what you don't show the world yourself. The ascendant and descendant always form a pair of opposite signs: Aries and Libra, Taurus and Scorpio, Gemini and Sagittarius, Cancer and Capricorn, Leo and Aquarius, Virgo and Pisces. With a Leo ascendant, your descendant is in Aquarius.
Frequently asked questions
What if I don't know my birth time? Then the ascendant can't be pinned down reliably. If you know at least a window, like "early morning," enter both its start and its end in the calculator. If both give the same sign, that's your ascendant. Some astrologers work the time out backward from major events in your life, which is called rectification.
Why does another website show a different ascendant? Most often because of daylight saving time or a wrongly entered birthplace. Sidereal astrology also gives a different result, since it counts the signs from the stars rather than from the spring point, so the ascendant often comes out one sign earlier. We use the Western, tropical zodiac here.
Does your ascendant change during your life? The ascendant from the moment of birth stays the same. What changes is how you handle it. Astrological tradition says that with age people grow into their Sun sign, and the ascendant stops being a mask.
Do twins have the same ascendant? Usually yes, if they're born a few minutes apart. But if the ascendant was changing signs right then, each twin can have a different one. That happens most easily with Pisces and Aries, which rise the fastest.
